Your Comments and Questions
One of the things I love best about writing for teens and tweens is the chance to talk to my readers. If you have a question about my books, about writing and publishing in general, or if you just want to tell me what’s on your mind, this is the place. I’ll answer each message as soon as I can, but please remember that I travel quite a lot, and sometimes it may take a while for me to catch up. But I will write you back and you can read it here.
Or, click here if you’d rather send a private message that will not be posted.

I will tottaly read your new book i cant wait! what book do you like more Picture perfect or Defying Diva?
January 24th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Hi, It’s hard to pick one book over the other because they are very different. DIVA is about how Haley, with the help of new friends and a totally awesome guy gets her life back after a mean girl at school –the Diva, starts bad gossip about her. After you read it, you can write and let me know which one you liked best. Thanks for writing to me. I love hearing from my wonderful readers.

Hey Ms Love!
I LOVED Picture perfect!
It’s my most fave book in the world! I wished it will never end! you are the best writer ever! you should write more about Phoede and Nick it was really cool!
January 24th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Hey, I’m thrilled that you liked Phoebe and Nick. They were lots of fun to create, and they are still two of my favorite characters. I hope you’ll like the new book, Defying the Diva coming out in March, in which Haley falls in love with Evan….and with Harrison. Which guy is the right one for her? Which guy would YOU choose? Write and let me know. Cheers, D. Anne

Hey Ms Love i got Picture Perfect for Christmas and i love it so much i have already read it twice. I was wondering if you are writing another story about Phoebe and Nick.
Bye! Catherine
January 29th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Hi Catherine, I’m glad you enjoyed the book. No plans to write more about Phoebe and Nick, but I hope you’ll look for my new book, Defying the Diva in March. My main character, Haley, falls in love with two guys–Evan and Harrison, while trying to figure out how to take back her life from Camilla Quinn, the high school diva. I had a lot of fun writing Haley’s story and I hope my readers will enjoy it. D. Anne
January 29th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
im doing a book report on it and soo, what do u suggest i do?
January 29th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
You didn’t say which book you chose for your report, so I can’t be specific, but here are some general ideas:
Start with a bit of author background. You will find info about me on the “Biography” page of this website. Then click on “Inspirations” to find information about how I got the ideas for my books. Finally, you might write about questions such as: Which character did you like best and why? Did you agree of disagree with the decisions or actions of this character? Why or why not? What would you have done in the same situation?
What is the theme of this book? Give examples that illustrate the theme. Discus the setting for the book. How does the setting contribute to the mood and feel of the story? How does the story end? Were you satisfied with the ending? Why or why not? Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not? I hope this helps. Good luck!! D. Anne

January 29th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
have you ever won any awards for your books?
If so what books
Caitlin
January 29th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
My books have been nominated for many awards, and have won a few. My Lone Star Summer won an award several years ago. The most recent book to win awards is The Puppeteer’s Apprentice. Semiprecious has been named to a couple of “Best Books” lists and is nominated for an award to be given in 2008.
The best “awards” of all are letters I get from readers who have enjoyed my books. Thanks for writing. D. Anne

hi, I have to do a research project on you, and need to know a few questions. That aren’t listed on your site..
first of all,
whats your culture ? and some interesting life experiences ?
Also when were youu born ?
the book I just read ” Semiprecious” I was wondering what the theme of the novel would be ?
Thanks for taking the timee to write back…
Kaitlyn..
January 29th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Hi Kaitlyn,
I guess you’d describe my culture as small town southern. I grew up in the same town where my maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins lived, so I had plenty of playmates in addition to my brothers. Many of my most interesting life experiences came as the result of travel to places such as New Zealand where I took a boat out to the Tasman Sea, hiked the forests, and explored the remains of a volcanic explosion. I’ve visited the sacred sites of the ancient Hawaiian people, ridden horses in Arizona on Christmas morning, traveled by ferry among the little towns in Bermuda. One year I visited the Cuna Indians of Panama and toured one of their villages. All of these experiences gave me a better understanding of other places and other people. Closer to home, I have worked with underprivileged preschoolers, performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial By Jury” in a local opera company, and once, I sang with a rock band. I was born in 1949.
In writing Semiprecious, I wanted to explore the importance of families and the true meaning of home. These are the themes I intend for readers to take away from the book.
I hope this helps with your research paper. Good luck. I hope you ace it!! D. Anne

Hi Tiara,
I depend a lot on memories and imagination. I’m motivated by the need to tell a good story story and by letters from my readers. It’s very satisfying when readers write to tell me how much they liked a certain book or certain characters.
All my best, D. Anne

Hi, This is Valerie. i want to be a writer, but i don’t mean like in a magazine, website or newspaper. I know people say “start small” but i’m almost fifteen, and I want to be able to walk into a local Barnes & Noble and see one of my books on the shelf. I’ve always wanted to be the “youngest writer ever” and i actually used to imagine myslef getting an award for it (this was in the third grade) and by now i know i won’t be the “youngest writer” obviously, but i still want to be able to see one of my books on the shelf. Thats like a dream to me. Do you have any advice. Thanks-Val
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:44 am
Hi Valerie,
I can so totally relate to your letter because I grew up dreaming of being a published author. I was in third grade when I knew that I wanted to be a writer. I still remember the first time I walked into a bookstore and saw my first book on the shelf. I actually had to pop my hand over my mouth to keep from screaming with delight. It was such a fantastic feeling. After a dozen books, seeing the latest one on the shelf is still a huge thrill.
The best advice I can give you is to read tons of books and pay attention to how the author uses characterization, dialog, plot, setting, to create a complete, believable world. Read all kinds of books–adventure, historical novels, fantasy, etc. Secondly, you should try to write every day. It may be a character sketch, an idea for a plot, an overheard conversation, or a few pages of an ongoing story, but you must get into the habit of writing regularly. Even when you don’t particularly feel like it. That’s what successful writers do. Polish your work. Take some writers workshops. Go to writers conferences and talk to other writers, editors, agents. Learn as much as you can about writing, and about the publishing business. Good luck, Valerie. My dearest wish for you is that your dream comes true. D. Anne
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:44 am
I’m 14. I want to be a writer when I grow up. I’ve written an 164 page novel, along with some others. Is there any way I could get a book published now? Or am I too young?
~Natalie
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:45 am
Hi Natalie, I think it’s pretty hard to get a book contract until you are a bit older, but in the meantime, there are plenty of places you can get your work published–magazines, online sites, etc. If you will go to the “Links” page on this website, you will find links to some places that publish work by teens. In the meantime, keep writing and polishing your novel and when you are a bit older, go for it!! Good luck, Natalie.Keep me posted.
All my best wishes, D. Anne

for school i have to do a project on a summer book and i decided that i want to do it on semiprecious what should i do?
PS it must be an art project
July 28th, 2008 at 8:55 am
Hi Jessica,
Remember in the story that Garnet learned about the Mexican muralists in her art class at school? Maybe you could make a mural that shows some of the important scenes in the novel such as Garnet and Opal in the chicken truck, or at the Christmas play, or at Charlie’s funeral. Or, you could make a set of worry dolls like the ones Charlie gave Garnet.
Good luck with the project. Thanks for writing!!

D. Anne
September 4th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Hi Maree,
I’m thrilled that you and your daughter are enjoying Mouses’s story. While researching “The Puppeteer’s Apprentice” I learned that the goosewomen, who often had to walk a long way to take their geese to market, coated their feet in tar to protect them. One of the many interesting tidbits I picked up during the writing of this story.
Thanks so much for writing!
September 7th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
hi dorthy what music do you listen to when you writing i know that some other writers do
September 8th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Hi Jessica,
Most of the time I don’t have music playing while I work. I get caught up in singing along with the lyrics and forget what I wanted to write! But I always research the songs that were popular during the time when the story takes place. When I was working on Semiprecious for instance, I listened to Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, and a lot of country western singers such as Hank Williams, Conway Twitty, etc, because Garnet’s mother Melanie was obsessed with it.
Right now i am working on a book about a girl who loves Beatles music, so I am listening to a lot of Beatles tunes. I saw Paul McCartney in concert a couple of years ago.
When I am not writing I listen to The Fray, Maroon Five, Pat Green, Martina McBride, BB King, Etta James, Diana Krall, and The Eagles. I like almost every kind of music and I go to a lot of live concerts.
Later,
D. Anne

Hi D. Anne,
Its me jessica again, im am sorry for writing to you so much. but i am an insipring writer i have been writing for 9 years ( i just turned 15) any way, do you use a format while writing your books like climax, resloution, rising action, falling action, etc. because i am writing a book( nicknamed MTFC making the final cut) and it isnt a typical book with those themes or requirements i was wondering if you used them???
Jessica K. Samp- practice of an authors name
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Hi Jessica,
Hey, it’s always great to hear from you. When I plot a story I begin with my main character– who she is, what she wants more than anything in the world, why she wants it, and what is standing in her way of getting it. The rising action is basically the actions that she takes in pursuit of her goal, the climax is the point in the story where she either reaches her goal or doesn’t, and the falling action shows the reader how the character has changed as a result. Is she wiser than before? Does she know more about herself, or about others, than before? Has she changed her opinion about something important?
I hope this helps you with your story. Keep working on it, okay?

D. Anne
October 5th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
When you first started writing did you write other things like poems or just stories? i wrote to and you ignored it how come???? it is one below mary!!!!
October 5th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Hey Jessica,
So sorry!!! I read your message, and then got distracted by a bunch of phone calls and forgot to answer your question. I tried to write poems, but I wasn’t any good at it. I think making good poems takes entirely different skills than writing stories and novels. So I gave up on ever being a poet, and concentrated on stories.

I really do enjoy your books. I do have a question, though. I assume that the Trasks live in Texas. Where do they go to the beach? The Gullah people live along the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. Did they go that far to go to the beach?
October 9th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Hi Judy,
What an observant reader you are! Yes, the Trasks drive from Texas to the beach in SC…I love Kiawah Island, near Charleston. My husband and I vacation there every year, in a beach villa named “Windswept.” I look forward to it every year.
Glad you enjoyed the book. I’m off to Nashville tomorrow to give a reading of DEFYING THE DIVA at the Southern Festival of Books. Should be fun!
Thanks so much for writing,
D. Anne

It’s great to hear from you and to know you’ve been working. The next step is to polish your work, and then figure out where to send it, based on the length and the kind of story it is (funny, sci fi, horror, etc) There are several online sites that publish work by teen writers, as well as a few print magazines. Take a look at the latest edition of Writers Market to find the appropriate market for your work. Good luck, and keep me posted!! All my best, D Anne

dear D.anne,
I watched your interview with Yadi on Meet Me At The Corner and heard about your “let’s talk” page and i am actually writing a book myself so far i have eight chapters but am having trouble finding a good title so i was wondering if you had a suggestion.
thanks,
Colleen
December 24th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Hi Colleen,
Wow, I’m impressed that you are writing a book and have already come so far. Titles are hard!
You might try thinking of something that describes your main character, such as The Puppeteer’s Apprentice or The Secret Prince. Or think of a well known phrase that relates to your story, as I did with teen photographer Phoebe Trask in Picture Perfect.
If you cant’ think of a good title right now, don’t worry about it. Finish the story first. The more you know about your character and your story, the easier it will become to create a great title.
Good luck! D. Anne

Semiprecious is my favorite book ever! Is there going to be a sequel? There totally should be! I love that book so much! Now I want to read Picture Perfect, but I think Semiprecious should have a second book in the series! I am just like Garnet! I am 12, like her, and I also have a sister that is Opal’s age, and my personality is exactly like Garnet’s!
February 16th, 2009 at 9:57 am
Hi Erin!
I’m thrilled that you liked Garnet’s story. She is one of my all time favorite characters. Right now there are no plans for a sequel, but maybe I will write one someday. I hope you enjoy PICTURE PERFECT. If you read DEFYING THE DIVA you will find a clue about what happened to Opal when she grew up. Write back and let me know if you spot the clue!
Thanks a bazillion for writing to me. It’s so much fun getting mail from my fabulous readers.

March 31st, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Hi!
I’m so glad you like Semiprecious and I am honored that you are writing a report about my books.
My birthday is January 12. Which makes me a Capricorn. For my birthday this year, I went out for Italian food. which is my very favorite.
Good luck on your report.
D. Anne
March 31st, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Hello,
Thanks for your question about topics for my books. Sometimes I take an event that really happened to me or to someone I know, and change it up a little for use in my stories. In Semiprecious, the episode in which Melanie gets a vacuum cleaner for her birthday is a version of something that happened in real life when I was a kid. I get other ideas from talking with my teen writing students about what’s going on in their lives, and from reading newspapers and magazines, sometimes even from song lyrics. My topics usually involve families (Semiprecious and Picture Perfect) or school issues such as bullying (Defying the Diva).
I hope this answers your question.
Thanks for writing! D. Anne

Dear D. Anne Love:
I am reading Mr. Henshaw with my 4th grade class and teachers, Mrs. Draxler and Mrs. Edgar. In the book, the main character, Leigh Botts, writes letters to his favorite author, Mr. Henshaw. In 6th grade, Leigh’s teacher assigns a project that requires Leigh to ask Mr. Henshaw ten questions. Now my teacher has done the same thing. Will you (My favorite author) please answer my question and return them to me at my school. I am looking forward to hear from? Thank you!
Do you still visit your uncle’s ranch in Texas?
Are you married?
What is your book Dakota Springs about?
Do you have kids?
What is your favorite book of yours?
Do you still write books?
Where did you get your ideas for the quilt book?
Your fan,
Samantha
May 6th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Hi Samantha from Mrs. Draxler’s class!
I’m happy to answer your questions for your school project. Ready? Here we go:
Since my uncle died I don’t go to his place anymore but I have great memories of going there when I was your age.
I’m married. My husband’s name is Ron. He likes books as much as I do, and we both like history. We collect antique maps and we travel every chance we get.
Dakota Spring is about a 12 year old girl named Rachel who lives on a farm with her dad and little brother. When her dad is hurt, he sends for Rachel’s grandmother who does not like Rachel at all. The story is about how Rachel and her grandmother, her dad and brother make a new kind of family. It’s still one of my favorite books.
We don’t have kids. We have two golden retrievers. Jake is almost two years old and does not like thunderstorms. When it storms, he jumps into the bed and hides under the covers. Major is almost nine years old and isn’t afraid of anything. They love to play chase and Frisbee in the back yard. Check out their pictures right here on the site. We think they are pretty cute.
My favorite book is always the one I happen to be working on at the moment.
I still write books. I am working on a new one now.
After my husband’s mom died, we found a quilt top in her cedar chest. Ron remembered stories about several of the fabrics she’d used and I started thinking about the ways quilts can tell stories. The next thing I knew I was writing a story about a girl who makes a quilt to help her family. One of the greatest things about being a writer is discovering story ideas from all sorts of places.
I hope this helps with your report, and I hope you get an A.

HI there fourth graders from Iowa!
So nice to hear from you. I’m glad you all enjoyed Dakota Spring. As for your questions: Dakota Spring is fiction, which as you know, means that I made it all up! So, each reader gets to imagine what happened when Grandmother Ravenell left, and whether Pa was able to walk, and whether Grandmother ever came back.
Maybe you could write a sequel to my story, telling what YOU think happened next.
Thanks for writing!
D. Anne

Hello to another Iowa reader
One of my favorite parts of Dakota Spring is the one where Mrs. Ravenell is scolding Jess about the dog, and all of a sudden, the dog sits up and starts to beg. I also like the part where Grandmother tells Jess and Caroline to call her “grandmother.”
This story did not happen in real life, but it could have happened! Yes, I am always writing a new book. I have written 12 books so far. I love writing. You can find some tips for writers on this website.
I do like sports. I played basketball when I was in middle school. I live in San ANtonio Texas so I cheer for the San ANtonio team. Go Spurs!!
have fun with the readers theater.

Hi to yet another Iowa reader!
You guys stuffed my in box this morning. Thanks to all for writing to me. I’m delighted to know you are enjoying Dakota Spring. I had a great time writing that book.
I’ave already answered the quetion about my favorite scene–Caroline is my favorite character because she is smart and brave and she likes to write.
Pets: I have two golden retrievers, Major and Jake. Their pictures are on the biography page of this website. Take a look. I think they are very very cute!
Favorite book: I have so many favorites it’s hard to pick just one. I love Charlotte’s Web quite a lot.
Dakota Spring is a novel, which means it isn’t really true. But I am so glad it felt real to you!
I’m working on a new book that will be my 13th one. I love writing!
D. Anne

Hi to another Iowa reader!
Did you know that I used to live in Iowa? One spring we had a tornado that narrowly missed our house. It destroyed seven or eight other houses and my husband’s office. It was very scary.
Ideas: One day I was driving through South Dakota and I saw an old farmhouse with a wagon wheel leaned against the sagging porch. Sunlight streamed through the broken windows. I started to imagine a family who might have lived there many years ago. And that led me to my story. I titled it Dakota Spring because the story happens at that time of year, and because spring is the time of new beginnings. In the story, Jess and Caroline experience a new beginning with their grandmother.
If I were doing a readers theater scene, I might choose the one in which Grandmother is helping Caroline get dressed for the Founders Day celebration and she gives Caroline the necklace. I loved writing that scene.
Yes, my name is Dorothy Anne. Perhaps one day I will write another story about Jess and Caroline. In the meantime I hope you will enjoy my other books.
Thanks for your letter!

Hello, Iowa fourth grader!
I’ve already answered the questions about my favorite character in Dakota Spring, and about how I came to write the story. I get ideas for stories from lots of places. Sometimes an idea does pop into my head, and other times, I start with a character and then figure out her story. This is what happened with SEMIPRECIOUS. The character of Garnet arrived in my head and then I had to tell her story.
I have hundreds of favorite books, so it’s hard to name just one. I really like Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. Have you read it?
Have fun with the readers’ theater. I wish I could be there to see you perform!

Hi! I love your book so much I couldn’t put it down! I’m doing a book report on it and I have a really dumb question: Is Willow Flats a real town in Oklahoma or did you just make it up? I was also wondering: Did Opal, Garnet, and their dad go back to Texas or did they stay with Aunt Julia? What happened to Mama? Please reply a.s.a.p. because my book report is on June 1st and I’m just starting writing it now! I’m in trouble: )
Thanks!!!
- A very big fan of yours
May 24th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Hi Very Big Fan!!
Willow Flats is a made up town…not a real place.
If you read the last few pages of the book you will find out where Opal, Garnet, and their dad end up.
Mama is still in Nashville, chasing her dream, about to go on tour with a bluegrass band…this, too, is shown in the last few pages of the book. Check it out!!
Good luck with your report.

I read your biography on your website and saw that you visit schools a lot. Is that just locally, or all around the country? If it’s all around the country, I was wondering if you’d ever be in Hillsboro, Oregon, where I live. I would love to meet you and get tips from you. I’m thinking about being a writer when I grow up. I’ve been to the Oregon Writing Festival twice in a row, and only 6 kids from my school were picked!!! I was one of them!!!! (There’s only 700 kids in my elementary school. I’m in 5th grade-almost 6th) I would love to meet you because you are truly my favorite author!!! I love all of your books! What are the names of the books you’ve written? How many books are you working on right now? What is the name of the book/books you’re working on (I mean, if you don’t mind my asking). Love to meet you soon!!!!!!
Thanks for your time!
- A HUGE FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 26th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Hello again to my reader in Hillsboro Oregon!
I’m absolutely thrilled that you want to be a writer. It’s the best, most fun job ever! Congrats on getting picked for the writing festival. What an honor.
I travel to schools all around the country. Maybe I’ll be coming to Oregon next year–you never know.
Most of my recent book titles are shown here on my website. I am working on a new book right now, but I am superstitious about talking about works in progress…so you’ll just have to keep checking in here at dannelove.com and I’ll post the new info here when the book is done.
I hope to meet you soon as well. Thanks for writing!

Picture Perfect is about a 14 year old girl who gets her first very cute boyfriend, has trouble with her mom, and with figuring out high school. Defying the Diva is about a girl who becomes the target of a mean girl in her school ,finds a summer job at a resort in the mountains, and falls in love twice! In Defying the Diva, both Opal from Semiprecious and Phoebe, from Picture Perfect have very small roles. I would love to write another book about Garnet someday. She is one of my all time favorites!
Thanks so much for writing!! D. Anne

Hi! I’m a huge fan of your book semiprecious. But want to know what book should I read first Picture Perfect or Defying Diva. They both sound like really great books. And also do you have any books with Garnet and Opal in it? I love your books. Keep writing D.Anne Love!
P.S
Do you have any other books other than Semiprecious,Picture Perfect, and Defying Diva?
September 26th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Hey Katy,
Great to hear from you! I’m thrilled that you enjoyed Semiprecious. It’s coming out in paperback for the first time this fall. It doesn’t matter which book you read first. Picture Perfect is about a girl struggling to keep her family from falling apart and to keep a secret for Nick, her first real boyfriend. Diva is about a girl who is the target of a high school bully and how she falls in love and takes her life back.
I have written a number of other books including My Lone Star Summer, about two best friends growing up in Texas, and The Secret Prince, an adventure fantasy featuring a princess hiding in a convent, an evil dwarf, a boy who is half human, a seer, a two headed beast, and many other weird creatures. Very different from Semiprecious, Picture Perfect and Diva, but I love writing all kinds of stories and trying new things. I hope someday to write another book about Garnet and Opal….check back here on my site…you’ll be the first to know about any new books coming out! In the meantime I hope you enjoy my other books.
Promise: I’ll keep writing, and you keep reading. Deal?? D. Anne

Hello (again)!!!!!!
I know Katy and she was the one who told me about Semiprecious and i am so gald that she did. I just finished a couple of weeks ago. It was an amazing ending. I have a few new questions :1. Are you writing any new books at this time? 2. What was the most enjoyable book you have ever written? 3. What other books have you written? 4. Which is the best books sold? (sorry if i spelled anything wrong) Oh and I am asking to Picture Prefect and Diva for my birthday in a few days. Sorry this is so long I just have so many things to say. Thank you so much for writing back to me i really appericate it that was so so nic for you to take the time to do that and not just to me but everyone because some people would not ever do that. Once again sorry this is soooo long.
Meg
P.S.: Plase keep writing D. Anne Love because your good at it really eally really really good.

October 8th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Hey Meg,
Every girl who writes to me is special and deserves a reply, so I try to keep up. I’m always happy to hear from you. Answers to your questions: I have just started writing a new book so it will be a while before it’s out. Most enjoyable? I’ve enjoyed them all for different reasons. I had fun with Picture Perfect even though it has some serious parts, too, and you already know how much I love Garnet and Opal. Other books are listed here on the website. Best books sold is hard to say because some are newer and it takes a while for sales to come in. Others have been published in paperback and in hardcover so those have sold more.
Happy Birthday!! I hope all your b’day wishes come true!! D. Anne
October 15th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
heyy i am doing a book project and well i need to know the setting if defying the diva.i try to find it in the book but dont know and i mean the setting at her school like ridgview but what year what state?//
October 15th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Hey Sofia,
I didn’t mention specifically a state, I imagined Colorado, but for your report, you can say Defying the Diva is set in an unnamed mountain state. And it’s in present time, no specific year.
I hope this helps. Good luck with your report.

Hi again!!
I have a question are you writing any more books? Oh and you are you should write another book with the girls from Semiprecious. It could be the sequel. And for my birthday im asking for some books and im hoping one of them will be a book written by you. What is your favorite book you written??
Bye
Katy
PS. I you are making a new book when it comes out me and meg will probably be one of the first to get it.
October 18th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
I have to do a report on your book “Defying the Diva”(by the way i loved it)
and i was wondering if you could tell me what the theme was for that book, i was thinking about using revenge, it makes life hectic, but that just does not sound right. so i was wondering if you could tell me your perspective please. and thank you!!
October 18th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Hey Katy,
Hi again! I am working on a new book, but it’s taking longer than I planned, so I am not sure when it will come out, but I hope soon. As to my favorite book, it’s hard to pick one…I like them all for different reasons. I have gotten a lot of fan mail about Semiprecious, it’s coming out in paperback on Tuesday!! So I gotta love that one. Garnet and Opal are a couple of my favorite characters. But I also enjoyed writing about Phoebe from Picture Perfect, and Haley from Defying the Diva.
I’ll keep you posted here on the site so you can be the first to get my latest book!
D Anne
October 18th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Hi Cleo,
So thrilled that you liked Defying the Diva!! As to theme: although revenge is one possibility, I really hoped the book would be about courage. Haley finds the courage to stand up to Camilla and take back her life, and Harrison has the courage to pursue his dreams as a singer/songwriter. Hope this helps. Good luck with your report.

October 26th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Hey Meg,
So great to hear from you! How’s it going??
The new book. Um….I am superstitious about talking too much about new work, afraid I’ll jinx it. But I can tell you this much: It’s about a girl named Piper who had something really horrible happen to her and she moved to a new school where no one knows her secret to start her life over. The title is KISS AND TELL.
I’ll keep you posted! Thanks a bunch for writing to me. D Anne

Hi again D. Anne! I just wanted to tell youthat I am now reading Picture Perfect and can not wait until I read Defying the Diva. I was just wondering how you got the titles for your books. Happy New Year and Hope your holiays were good
Meg
January 1st, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Hey Meg,
Happy New Year to you, too! My holidays were great–we spent them with family scattered across Texas. We were in Dallas on Christmas Eve and had a very unusual white Christmas! Snow and ice! How about you? Did you have a good time?
Titles: For Picture Perfect, I wanted something that would tie in with Phoebe’s apparently perfect family, to contrast with the imperfections going on beneath the surface. The idea that what we see on the surface doesn’t always reflect the truth. Deciding on that title was pretty easy. DEFYING THE DIVA, though, was harder. When I was working on it, I called it A Little Rebellion but when I went to New York to talk to my editors, they said it sounded too much like a story taking place during the Revolutionary War. So we stood in the office there and talked about some other ideas, and as I thought about one of the characters in the story who is SUCH a diva, DEFYING THE DIVA seemed to fit.
Have a fabulous 2010!!! D. Anne
January 12th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
Hi D Anne
I just wanted to tell you that I erote a essay that had Semipecious in it nd here it is:
Semiprecious V.S. The Lightening Thief
Semiprecious and The Lightening Thief are two books that have been
Read and enjoyed by many children around the world. Although they have some
Similarities they have a lot of differences too. For instance one major difference
is their genre. The Lightening Thief is a science-fiction book but Semiprecious is
a realistic-fiction book.
Semiprecious along with The Lightening Thief is fist person narration.
This means that the main character tells and explains the story. In the same way
both Percy Jackson, the main character from The Lightening Thief, and Garnet
Hubbard, the main character from Semiprecious, have harder family lives than
other children in the United States of America. My last way in which these books
are similar is that in my opinion they are both intersecting and excellent books.
The Lightening Thief was copyrighted in 2005 but on the other hand
Semiprecious was copyrighted in 2006. Semiprecious, written by D. Anne Love,
has 291 pages on the other hand The Lightening Thief, written by Rick Riodan,
has 375 pages. Although these books are both first person narration
Semiprecious is Garnet Hubbard, a girl talking, and The Lightening Thief is Percy
Jackson, a boy talking. The Lightening Thief mostly takes place in California,
New York City, and Camp Half Blood unlike Semiprecious that mostly takes
place in Texas, Ohio and a little bit in Tennessee.
Not only did Percy Jackson from The Lightening Thief not know his
birth dad the whole story but he went from boarding school to boarding school
and was attacked by monsters as Garnet Hubbard from Semiprecious knew her
dad all her life and only went to two different public schools. Garnet sadly didn’t
have a good relationship with her mom during the whole story and didn’t get to
see her a lot but Percy was every close to his mom for the whole story and would
be with her whenever he could. Percy was either staying at a boarding school,
with his mom or at Camp Half Blood on the other hand Garnet always swayed
with her Aunt Julia or her parents for the story. Garnet didn’t have any friends at
her second public school but became friends with a boy named Nathan however
Percy was friends with a satyr named Grover and a half blood named Annabeth
for about three quarters of the book. The last contrast I have is that The
Lightening Thief is a series book and Semiprecious is not a series book.
Like many other books Semiprecious and The Lightening Thief are
books that are in my opinion excellent books. They have many difference and
similarities.
I hope you like it ans yur okay with it um… I will tell u the grade when I get it
January 13th, 2010 at 9:32 am
Hi Meg,
Thanks for sharing your essay! Good luck. Keep me posted. I hope you get an A!

Hey would you recomend this book for 8th grade guys???
Plz email me!
January 26th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
Hey Killo,
I’m not sure which book you mean. Most of my books are about and for girls, although of course there are guy characters in all of them. Several years ago I wrote THE SECRET PRINCE a fantasy adventure for and about boys.
You may be able to find a copy in your local library.
Thanks for writing to me.

Hey!
I absolutely love your books. I’m finishing up Picture Perfect, I just have one one question. Do you write any other tween or teen books? I hope you keep on writing.
Thanks, Beth.
February 10th, 2010 at 10:01 am
Hi Beth,
Thank you so much for your kind words! At present I am working on a couple of things, but it may take a while, as I have some other deadlines to meet. I have written a total of 12 books for teens and tweens. The older titles, mostly for tweens, aren’t listed here on the site, because they are out of print, but you can often find them at your library or at online bookstores such as Powell’s. Here are the titles. The hardcover editions were published at Holiday House, New York, and the paperback editions by Random House (Dell Yearling)
A Year Without Rain–Rachel and her younger brother John Wesley must deal with drought on the prairie, a summer with their aunt, and their father’s new wife.
Three Against the Tide–When Federal troops invade their South Carolina island home, Susanna must get her two young brothers to safety and find their father, who is on a mission for General Robert E. Lee
I Remember the Alamo–The McCann family moves from Kentucky to Texas just in time to get caught up in the fight for Texas liberty. Jessie, her mother and younger brother take refuge in the Alamo.
My Lone Star Summer–Jill looks forward to summer on her grandmother’s Texas ranch and to reuniting with her best friend BJ. But BJ has changed. She’s become a cheerleader who cares only about boys, especially Trey, the cute new guy in town. This is a story about friendship, and the inevitable growing apart that comes with growing up. Winner of the Friends of American Writers Juvenile Fiction Prize.
Dakota Spring–When their father is injured on their farm, Caroline and Jess meet the grandmother they never knew and learn about what it means to be a family.
Bess’s Log Cabin Quilt–a young girl settles in Oregon with her mother and must find a way to save her family’s farm.
Thanks again for writing, Beth. Happy reading!!

Oh good, you need to write more of those tween books! They are to die for. I love how you like to communicate with your fans. That is super sweet. You’r books keep me up at night with the flashlight. HAHA. I love Picture Perfect, you should write more about Phoebe and Nick. Also, do you do any book signings? I would LOVE to meet you.
Beth
February 11th, 2010 at 9:23 am
Hey Beth,
Nice to hear from you again! I usually hold book signings when a new book comes out, or when I am invited to book fairs and festivals around the country. I try to post these events here on the site..so please visit again.
I’m glad you like Phoebe. I gave her a small role in my newest book, DEFYING THE DIVA.
I’d love to meet you, too!
Best,

Oh, well I live in Miami, FL so hopefully you will come on down and enjoy the beautiful weather. But it is a tad chilly out this week. It is quite a funny story how I found your books. One day I was at my school library, and I saw the cover of Defying the Diva, with the young girl in water. And I’m a swimmer, so it caught my eye. I read it, and LOVED it. I will recommend to all of my friends!
Beth
February 12th, 2010 at 9:29 am
Hi Beth,
Lucky you! I guess Miami is one of the only cities in America that isn’t snowed in today. I was in Florida a couple of years ago, doing a book signing in Coral Gables and visiting a school in Vero Beach. Hope I get a chance to come back one of these days. I’m a beach lover and I really enjoyed Florida.
Meantime, thank you so much for all your nice emails, and for recommending DIVA to your friends.
Cheers,
D. Anne
February 13th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
I have one question. Why do you write D. instead of Dorothy?
February 14th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
Hey Beth,
When I first started writing, an agent told me that “Dorothy” was too old fashioned a name. I so agreed with him! Couldnt’ believe my parents gave me such an old lady name. When I was a teenager I wanted to change my name to Pamela. So when I became a writer I shortened my name to D Anne.
I’ll keep you posted here on the site if I’m ever headed back to Coral Gables…they have a fabulous bookstore.
Best,
D
February 18th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
Dear Ms. D. Anne. Love,
I previously just finished your book Semi Precious, and let me tell you, that is one of my all time favorite books. Everytime I see your name as the author,I just have to see the book. You are very good at keeping your reader entertained through out the whole book. I especially like the part in Semi Precious where the one youngest daughter goes to Nashville to visit her mom and see how she was doing. That part just seems to draw my attention more.
The reason I wrote your letter was to beg and pleed for you to write a sequel to the book Semi Precious. It would be very cool if you did. The sequel could be about the daughters moving in with their mother in Nashville. This sequel could be a very good book, and it could possibly draw more readers.
Your number 1 reader,
Chyanne Sargent
February 18th, 2010 at 5:24 pm
Hi Chyanne,
Wow, what a great letter. Thanks so much for writing. I had great fun writing Garnet’s and Opal’s story, and I would love to write a sequel to Semiprecious someday. In the meantime I hope you will enjoy my other books.
All my best,
D. Anne
March 10th, 2010 at 10:33 am
dear d. anne. love ive replied to you before about a year ago you may not remember me
but im cassie and i have a qestion do you have a writers notebook? i g2g bye
March 10th, 2010 at 11:55 am
Hey Cassie,
I do remember you. So nice to hear from you again. Yes, I have a writer’s notebook. I keep all kinds of stuff in it. Ideas for stories, websites where I can do research, possible names for characters, bits of overheard conversations that might be useful when I’m writing dialog, photos of places I’m writing about. Once I finish a story I put all the pages from my writer’s notebook into a three ring binder with the name of the book on the spine. That helps me if I ever need to go back and check on anything.
I hope your school year is going well and that you are looking forward to a fabulous summer!

Hi D. Anne Love
It has been s long since I have talk to you. How are you? Any new books published and having a debut in stores soon? I hope so, then I can read it. I finished reading Picture Perfect awhile ago. It was a shocker and had a lot of sapense(if that is how you spell it:]). I wasn’t expecting a lot of it but it was AMAZING. I am not going to say my favorite part because then every reader would now and well that would spoil a part of the book. I went to the book part of the website. i love your new covers fr Semiprecious and Picture Perfect. Do you make the covers yourself?
Oh and I will try to find out what I got on the essay I forgotwhat it was since it has been soooo long. I must go now and study though. So, good bye I hope to talk or type to you again soon.
– Meg
P.S.: Have you ever met any other authors? If so who?
March 17th, 2010 at 8:17 am
Hi Meg,
So great to hear from you! I’m glad you enjoyed Picture Perfect, and thanks for not giving the plot away! I love the new cover, too, and no, I don’t make them myself. The very talented people at Simon and Schuster do that. Right now I’m working on some books for older readers, so I don’t have another new teen book coming out for a while. I have been a writer fora long time, and I’ve met many many authors, including Rachel Cohn, Libba Bray, Karen Cushman, Kirby Larson, Richard Peck, Bruce Coville, Cynthia Leitich Smith….and many more.
No book signings scheduled for now, but I’ll keep you posted. Take care!!

Hi again
I just wanted to ask if you had to choose a book of yours to make a movie which one would you pick? Also would you like for one of your books to be a movie ? Do you think one will?
Meg
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:13 am
Hi Meg,
Did you see the very sad story in the news this week about the high school girl in MA who killed herself because others at school were bullying her? This made me so angry and so sad…stories like this is the reason I wrote DEFYING THE DIVA. To show girls who are being bullied that they are not alone and that there are places they can go to get help. If I had to pick one of my books to become a movie, I’d pick DIVA. If the movie saved only one person, that alone would be worth it.
On a happier note, I think SEMIPRECIOUS would make a fun movie….are you listening, Hollywood??
Happy Easter, Meg.

Hi Rodaba,
Thank you so much! I enjoyed writing Jessie’s story. I live in San Antonio, where the story takes place, and sometimes when I visit the Alamo, I imagine Jessie and Colonel Travis and all the rest….it’s a very special book to me and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you so much fir giving me the opportunity to photograph you today. I very much enjoyed our session today. From the little time we spent today I can see not only the enjoyment you get from writing but also helping our young ones in the society we live in.
I soooo enjoyed also the company of your boys! I got the best pics of them.
Thank you!

May 7th, 2010 at 7:05 pm
i love your books and i have a few questions. Where do you get ideas for your books? Are any of your books based on something that has happened to you.
May 7th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Hi Rodaba,
I’m glad you enjoy my books. Some of my ideas come from readers, others come from things that happened to me or my friends. When I was 14 I had to move to a new state, a new school, and it was hard and scary. I used some of those memories to write Semiprecious.
Some of my readers suggested that I write about bullying in high school because it’s a problem, and that was what led me to write Defying the Diva.
Thanks a bunch for writing to me.
Cheers,
D Anne
June 9th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
Hi!
We had to pick an author to write about for my 6th grade biography, and i will pick you over and over and over! ! Also i figured out something cool. I read DEFYING THE DIVE after i read SEMIPRECIOUS and PICTURE PERFECT, and you like the name’s Phoebe, Melanie, and Opal, right? Because in SEMIPRECIOUS, the mom’s name was Melanie and the sister’s name was Opal, and in Picture Perfect the main character is Phoebe. And in DEFYING THE DIVA, there were girls named Phoebe, Melanie, and Opal! And they were also from Texas, which is were PICTURE PERFECT and SEMIPRECIOUS take place!!
June 9th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Hi Astrid,
Thanks so much for your email! And it’s so cool that you figured out about the names in my books. I think it’s so much fun to read about a character and then find her in another story, don’t you? It’s like running into an old friend somewhere when you weren’t expecting it.
I hope you have a fantastic summer!

June 18th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
hi,
I just finished reading “defying the diva” its such a g itood book. I loved it all and I couldnt pick a favourite bit out of it because it was all GREAT!!! i think that franky was my favourite character in it because she is kind, friendly and puts others beffore herself. I think i like her too because she is a little bit like me. I also like vanessa. I also wanted to say that I have been bullied before (not as bad as halley though) and it is not a fun experience. It was in grade 6 where one of my best friends who betrayed my trust in her, emailed me saying that i had copyed her by getting the same phone as her. i was lucky because straight away I told my mum and we did something about it. then later in the year she started bullying me again by saying that i had ditched her to be with the “cool people” i had moved groups but only because i wanna to keep away from her, i emailed her back after what she said and told her that she hurt peoples feeling to make her feel good, which was the truth. she reacted back and said alot of hurtful things. in the end she got punished and suspeneded for a week. all of my friends were supportive and there for me all the time that it happened. well anyway we graduated and now i am in year 7 at a diffrent school from her. we both decided that it was best for us not to keep intouch and now we are both happier and loving our new school. defying the diva was a reall inspiration for me and i loved it. keep up the good work and i look forward to your next book.
Good luck
from Grace

Hello,
I just finshed reading SEMIPRECIOUS and i LOVED IT it is an amazing story. I have a question Would you ever write a second SEMIPRECIOUS because if you did that would be really cool
June 19th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Dear Grace,
I am delighted that you liked DEFYING THE DIVA, and very glad indeed that your trouble with the bully is past you. Life is so hard sometimes, isn’t it? I But it sounds as if you handled it very well. Good for you!
Thanks so much for writing to me!!
Cheers,
D. Anne
June 19th, 2010 at 10:44 am
Dear Jenna,
SEMIPRECIOUS is a very special book to me, and it’s always so exciting to hear that my readers like it, too! Maybe some day I will write another book about Garnet and Opal. In the meantime, I hope you’ll look for my other books. Here on the website you can see the new cover for PICTURE PERFECT which is coming out this fall. I love it, and I hope my readers will, too.
All my best,

Hey Ciara,

Good luck with your review. I’m sure it’ll be absolutely fantastic!!

Hello D. Anne,
It has been so long since I have commented. How’s your summer going? Have been working on any good books? To cut to the chase, during my summer vaction ,which is going to end on the 7th : (, I had to read a biography. I read an auto-biography “The child called It” by Dave Pelzer an d I was thinking about how good an auto-biography on you would be. So if you ever wrote one or had a biography done please let me know, if not you should think about. Have a nice year!

Hi Meg!
What a nice surprise to hear from you! Summer has been very busy, as I am working on a book for adults, and getting ready to go to a couple of writers conferences. I’m looking forward to hanging out with my writer friends and to meeting new ones.
I haven’t written an auto biography—but if I ever do, I’ll announce it here on the site. I hope you’ve had a great summer and that you have a fabulous new year. My nephew started his senior year in high school last week. He’s into acting, and has already started rehearsals for their first production.
Have a great year, my friend. It’ s always good to get your notes.
Best,
D Anne
