Your Comments and Questions

One of the things I love best about writing for teens and tweens is the chance to talk to my readers. If you have a question about my books, about writing and publishing in general, or if you just want to tell me what’s on your mind, this is the place. I’ll answer each message as soon as I can, but please remember that I travel quite a lot, and sometimes it may take a while for me to catch up. But I will write you back and you can read it here.

Or, click here if you’d rather send a private message that will not be posted.

    Dear Jenna,

SEMIPRECIOUS is a very special book to me, and it’s always so exciting to hear that my readers like it, too! Maybe some day I will write another book about Garnet and Opal. In the meantime, I hope you’ll look for my other books. Here on the website you can see the new cover for PICTURE PERFECT which is coming out this fall. I love it, and I hope my readers will, too.

    All my best,

    Hey Ciara,

Good luck with your review. I’m sure it’ll be absolutely fantastic!!

    Hello D. Anne,

It has been so long since I have commented. How’s your summer going? Have been working on any good books? To cut to the chase, during my summer vaction ,which is going to end on the 7th : (, I had to read a biography. I read an auto-biography “The child called It” by Dave Pelzer an d I was thinking about how good an auto-biography on you would be. So if you ever wrote one or had a biography done please let me know, if not you should think about. Have a nice year!

    dorothy Says:

    Hi Meg!

What a nice surprise to hear from you! Summer has been very busy, as I am working on a book for adults, and getting ready to go to a couple of writers conferences. I’m looking forward to hanging out with my writer friends and to meeting new ones.

I haven’t written an auto biography—but if I ever do, I’ll announce it here on the site. I hope you’ve had a great summer and that you have a fabulous new year. My nephew started his senior year in high school last week. He’s into acting, and has already started rehearsals for their first production.

Have a great year, my friend. It’ s always good to get your notes.

    Best,
    D Anne

    dorothy Says:

    Hi Maddie,

So happy you liked DIVA. It was fun to write, but sad, too, to know that real life girls face bullying at high school every day. I don’t have anything new coming out right away. I’m working on a series of books for older readers, but I hope to have a new YA in the works soon!
If you haven’t read PICTURE PERFECT yet, check out the new paperback edition coming out now.

    Cheers,

like I can do anything like I could make a seashell necklace if i wanted 2… but do u have any ideas??

  17. 267
    dorothy Says:

    Hi,

So cool that you like Picture Perfect. I had a blast writing it, and isn’t the new cover gorgeous?? I love it!!

Like your idea for a seashell necklace. you could do that, or you could make a collage of pictures cut from magazines or downloaded from the net that illustrate scenes from the book. For instance the Howdy Dance, or Phoebe and Nick’s first date, or Zane at his swim meet, or Phoebe and Shyla buying shoes at happy feet….lots of possibilities. Good luck, have fun, and write back and let me know what you decided to do and how it turned out.

    All best,

    Anne,
I just finished reading your book Defying The Diva and loved it! I hope more people will read it so they will realize that bullying happens everywhere and everyday. I hope you get to write more books like this one. Do you recommend what book I should read next of yours??

  22. 272
    dorothy Says:

    Hi Anika,

I’m so pleased that you enjoyed DIVA. I,too, hope that it will help girls know that they are not alone. Have you read Picture Perfect? It just came out in paperback with a gorgeous new cover. I think you might like it. Remember in DIVA when Haley goes to sign up for movie night at the resort and a girl named Phoebe helps her? Phoebe is the main character in Picture Perfect. I had so much fun giving her a cameo role in DIVA.

Thanks so much for writing. It’s such a joy to get mail from my readers.

    All best,
    D. Anne

  24. 274
    dorothy Says:

    Hi Anisha,

Of course I remember Miss Hantman! We met in Boca Raton, Florida when she was in sixth grade and I visited her school. Miss Hantman is a pretty fabulous writer herself!
I’m so pleased you enjoyed Bess’s story. Here are the titles of a few more of my books you might find in your school library: THREE AGAINST THE TIDE, MY LONE STAR SUMMER, DAKOTA SPRING, A YEAR WITHOUT RAIN, I REMEMBER THE ALAMO, THE SECRET PRINCE, and THE PUPPETEER’S APPRENTICE.

I was inspired to write by reading hundreds of wonderful books, and by a teacher who told me that I was good at writing stories. Thanks so much for writing to me. I hope you enjoy my other stories. Please tell Miss Hantman hello from me. And keep on reading!! Your friend, D. Anne

  29. 279
    dorothy Says:

    Hi there, Same Anisha!

How are you today? I love many kinds of books—novels, biographies, history. One of my favorite authors is Karen Cushman. Have you read any of her books? Her newest one is called Alchemy and Meggie Swann and I love it! It just came out last spring, but your library might have a copy by now.

Right now I am working on three books for grownups so it might be a while before I can write another book like The Puppeteer’s Apprentice or Bess’s Log Cabin Quilt. But maybe my other books will keep you busy reading for a while. Tell Miss Hantman I said hi.

    Anisha Says:

    Dear D Anne Love,
It is Anisha AGAIN! I have a couple MORE fantastic questions to ask you. 1.Do you have any recent books you wrote that you admire?
    2. How long does it take you to put your books on publish?
    3. what advice would you give to people that want to be just like you, A great author?
    4. Do your books relate to your ancestors?
    5. What inspired you to write these WONDERFUL books?
    Student of Miss.Hantman,
    Anisha πŸ™‚

  32. 282
    dorothy Says:

    Hey there Anisha,

Recent books: I had so much fun writing SEMIPRECIOUS and PICTURE PERFECT. It’s up to others as to whether they should be admired. πŸ™‚ It usually takes about a year from the time I turn in a manuscript until the book is published. There are lots of steps in between such as designing a cover,(which my publisher does) writing the flap copy, writing revisions. Hard work, but it’s all very exciting.
My best advice to young writers who want to publish someday is to read a lot of good books, and write something every day. Just like football players or musicians or dancers, writers improve with practice. So, write a short story, a poem, a profile of an interesting person. Keep a journal. It’s all good practice. My books don’t really relate to my ancestors. I find inspiration everywhere—from my readers, from my experiences. From a newspaper article, a conversation with a friend. I never know when inspiration will strike, but when it does, it’s always very exciting. Your friend, D Anne

Hi!!! Hope all is well with you. I know Dad has told you that I am not a librarian. I love, love, love, my job. We are celebrating “Read Across America” next week (one week early because I am having a book fair the next week). I am ready My Lone Star Summer to one of my classes. It is a fourth grade class that has 24 students –all of whom are girls!! They love the book so far and I want to read Semiprecious next. In my next book order, I will be adding all of your books that are age appropriate for our school. Love you, Ronda C. Cooper

By the way==The boys are great. The girls (Princess & Macy) are precious and the rest of the family is doing well. Keep in touch!!

Hello, I was just wondering if you have some information about anything that could help me with a research paper about your books or your life as an author or even in school. Well, you see im in the 5th grade and in our L.A class we are doing reports on aiuthors. Thanks for your time.

  36. 286
    dorothy Says:

    Hi Josie,

I’m honored that you are doing a research paper on me and my books. Here on the website you will find a biography, and if you read the “inspirations” page you’ll find information about how I got the ideas for some of my books and why I chose to write them. If you still have a question or two after you have read everything here, I’ll be happy to answer them.

    Good luck with your paper!

    Sincerely, D. Anne

    Josie Says:

I was wondering if you could refer me to one of your books to read i would like to find out more about the way you write and plus i want to read another one of your books they are amazing! πŸ™‚

  41. 291
    Rayden Says:

    Hello D.Anne,
I was not for sure if you did , but did you ever write a sequel to Three Against the Tide?

  42. 292
    dorothy Says:

    Hi Rayden,

Thanks for writing to me! Right now I am working on some books for grownups, but you may find many of my other books in your school or town library. Some of the titles: Dakota Spring, Bess’s Log Cabin Quilt, The Secret Prince, I Remember the Alamo, and A Year Without Rain, plus all of the books you see here on my website. Those should keep you busy reading for a while!

I didn’t write a sequel to Three Against the Tide. But I bet you can imagine what happened to Susannah, Neddie, and Sammy after the war was over. Maybe you will write that story yourself!

Take care. Your friend, D Anne

  43. 293
    dorothy Says:

    Hi again Josie!

No. no time travel in a boat for my three intrepid kids from Three Against the Tide. That would be a completely different idea, wouldn’t it? As far as another of my books to read, I hope you will enjoy the others you see here on the website, especially Semiprecious and Picture Perfect.

Check your school or town library for some of my earlier books such as Dakota Spring, I Remember the Alamo, The Secret Prince, My Lone Star Summer, and A Year Without Rain. I hope you will enjoy them.

    D. Anne

    Josie Says:

Did you ever write any more books on time travle? If more then 2 , then witch one would you perfer me to read first.

  45. 295
    Rayden Says:

    Dear D.Anne,
I think you are amazing! I love your books and I would like to comment on Josie because I`m in her class and I think she getting your books mixed up with another book called George Washington`s Socks, which is a book about 5 kids in present time who go camping in the woods (even though there not aloud) and find a boat. They get on the boat and go time traveling all the way back into the time period of the civil war.
    your friend,
    Rayden

  46. 296
    josie Says:

Yess shes right thank you Rayden i totally agree your amazing.

  47. 297
    dorothy Says:

    Hey Rayden,

I’m glad you wrote and cleared that up, because I was a bit confused about the time travel in a boat thing. In Three Against the Tide, my three characters take a boat on a dangerous journey to find their missing father during the Civil War, but there is no time travel involved.

George Washington’s Socks sounds like a great book, though. I’ll look for it in my library.

Thanks a bunch for writing. I’m so happy to know you enjoy my books.

    Your friend, D Anne
