Your Comments and Questions

One of the things I love best about writing for teens and tweens is the chance to talk to my readers. If you have a question about my books, about writing and publishing in general, or if you just want to tell me what’s on your mind, this is the place. I’ll answer each message as soon as I can, but please remember that I travel quite a lot, and sometimes it may take a while for me to catch up. But I will write you back and you can read it here.

Or, click here if you’d rather send a private message that will not be posted.

    dorothy Says:

    Hey Meg,

Nice to hear from you. Hope all is well with you.

Right now I am busy writing three books for adult readers. The first one is coming out in June and I am revising the second one right now, and then I have to write the third one by November 1st. Very busy!! So it may be a while before I can write more books for teens. I would LOVE to write another book about Garnet and Opal—SEMIPRECIOUS is one of my favorites, but the publisher is not interested in my doing so right now. Maybe someday….

    All best,
    D Anne

    Hi,
I know this is a lot to ask and I probably sound really wierd, but I would LOVE it if you could write a new book. I have read every single book of yours and would read them over and over again! My favorite book of yours is Semi-Precious. I just finished Picture Perfect and Defying The Diva. Love your books once again and would love for you to write more. Thanks for listening!

    dorothy Says:

    Hi Stella,

What a sweet letter. Thank you so much for writing, and for being such a fan of my work. I would LOVE to write more books for you, and I hope someday I can. Right now I am getting ready to publish 3 books for adult readers and they keep me pretty busy!

In the meantime, you might enjoy books written by a friend of mine, Frances O Rourke
Dowell. Look for her books in your library, and let me know what you think. And be sure to look for a novel called The Loud Silence of Francine Green by my friend Karen Cushman. It’s partly funny and partly serious….I think you will enjoy it, too.

All my best to you, Stella,

So glad to hear from you. Miss Hantman is an amazing teacher, writer, and person. I am so glad you’re in her class. I have a new book out for older readers called Beyond All Measure. Hello!! Do you remmeber me? It’s been along time hasn’t it! Well I had a question I’ve been dying to ask you! So here’s the thing I have to read 20 books by the end of the school year and I was thinking I could read one of your books! I want you to tell me which books you would reccamend to me!

P.S I probably spelled some things wrong! To bad your website doesn’t have spell check

    Love

  24. 324
    dorothy Says:

    Hi Rodaba,

Of course I remember you! How wonderful to hear from you. As to which of my books to recommend to you, I think it depends on the kinds of stories you enjoy reading. I think when we met in New York I had just published The Puppeteer’s Apprentice. I love that book, but you are older now and might prefer some of my later books. Many girls tell me that SEMIPRECIOUS is their favorite of all my books, and others have enjoyed PICTURE PERFECT. My newest book, DEFYING THE DIVA is about high school bullying. It contains one or two words that some moms dont’ approve of. SO if your mom is one of those, then I’d recommend SEMIPRECIOUS or PICTURE PERFECT.

I hope you’ll write again and keep in touch. Tell me what is going on in your life these days…

    Love to you,
    D Anne

  25. 325
    Rodaba Rahim Says:

Thanks for the reccomendations! I think I’ll read all of them! My mom does not mind about bad words in books because she thinks that books are books and the writer writes what she feels like writing! Just a very quick question! I’m doing a survey for my computer class and I wanted to survey you!

    Rodaba Rahim Says:

Thanks! Also I just wanted to tell you about an exciting thing that happened to me this summer! I almost got published! Almost though! So this is how it happened! So last year I wrote a short story that turned out to be longer than I expected and I thought it was so good I wanted to enter it into a contest! So I went on google and tryed to find a good contest! I found a good one and made sure it was safe and found out the prize was to be published!!! So of course I entered! About 3 months later I got a letter saying I was a finalist!!!!! I was so excited! I read the letter and it said winners will be anoouced a month later! Enfortunatley I got another letter saying that I didn’t make it! But I was proud of my self for making the finalists and there was only 9 finalists total!!! On the bright side the publisher told me they were holding another contest in december! It’s bacically the same contest and hopefully I win. Then you will be the one reading my books instead of me reading your books! We’ll swicth places!!

    Rodaba

  28. 328
    dorothy Says:

This is wonderful news, Rodaba. Congratulations on making the finals!! Becoming a published writer takes a lot of hard work and patience. One of my friends wrote a book that was rejected 45 times!!! But she kept at it, and the book was finally published and won awards.

I do hope you win next time. Be sure and let me know! I’d LOVE to read your books one day. Wouldn’t that be just the coolest thing ever??

    Keep me posted!
    D Anne

  29. 329
    Rodaba Rahim Says:

Thanks! I’m already half way through my next piece! It’s called tears of the roses! It’s about the world ending! It will be so cool if this book gets published!!! I told my friends about the contest and now I have some competition! My friends have been writing their own stories and they’re submitting their entries!! I’m still going to try to win though!!!

    dorothy Says:

Yay!!! So glad you are enjoying Phoebe’s story. I really loved writing about her romance with Nick. He’s such a cool guy. πŸ™‚

    D Anne

  32. 332
    Rodaba Rahim Says:

I just finished Picture Perfect!!!! I loved it!! Phoebe’s romance with Nick was my favorite part!!! I hate that Nick had to move though!! But I loved the book!!! It was very inspiring!!! But my brother is 2 years older than me but, he doesn’t treat me as good Pheobe’s brother Zane treats her!! Pheobe and Zane are practically best friends and my brother and I are like enimies!!! I’m just starting Defying The Diva!!! Can’t wait!!

    Rodaba

  33. 333
    dorothy Says:

Wow, that was fast! I loved Nick and Phoebe’s romance, too. And I had fun writing about Zane’s crush on Ginger Threadgill. πŸ™‚ Anyway, DIVA is more serious kind of book but I hope you will like it, too.

    D Anne

  34. 334
    Rodaba Rahim Says:

I’m on chapter 12 in Diva and it’s really good! I can tell why you think that this book is a little more for higher level teenager’s but I’m still enjoying it!! I’m only 12 but I still understand the high school feelings of Haley. I was to bullyed alot in elementry school but I managed to get through it without geting adults involved! It was me and these 3 other girls me and one girl Jay’da had a more bound because we were friends the year before and then I made friends with these 2 other new girls Isabella and Oma and they both shared a bound with each other more than with me! The 4 of us started a group friendship but it didn’t work out! Jay’da was starting to become a bully to all of us! Isabella and Oma would ignore me more because Jay’da would always be following me! Me and Jay’da would always get into fights! Oma and Isabella would leave off and leave me to deal with her! i was always scared to tell Jay’da how I feel but one day I managed to telll her the truth and she cryed!!! Then she ignored me and found other friends! Now that I moved up to middle school Jayda and Oma are in the same middle school and me and Isabella are in another middle school together! Jayda is finally out of my life! Even when she see’s me see try’s not to talk to me! Sure other people bullyed me but they stopped when I was elected mayor of 5th grade!

    Rodaba

  35. 335
    dorothy Says:

Good for you, Sweetie! And congratulations on being elected mayor of fifth grade. that’s fantastic. Enjoy the rest of DIVA!

    Rodaba Rahim Says:

Thanks!! I’m on the last chapter of Diva and am so anxious to see what happens next!!!I’m only on my 3rd day of reading Diva! I’m going to read semiprecious next! As you can see when I get drawn into a book I can’t stop!! The same thing happened to me with the hunger games series!!!I couldn’t stop! I read the whole series in 1 month!! I’m a very fast reader! So that’s what inspired me to write! I wrote about my dream land and what I wanted to happen even though I know It will never happen to me and that was the book that I entered in the contest!

    Rodaba

  37. 337
    dorothy Says:

Wow, you are ARE a fast reader. I hope you enjoy SEMIPRECIOUS.

    D. Anne

  38. 338
    Rodaba Rahim Says:

I’m going to start Semiprecious tommorrow and I just went to the library and got the book today!!! I’m excited to read it but I’m not starting today because I know i’m going to get caught up in it and read till the end!! I just can’t controll myself!! I just wanted to make sure but, is Semiprcious historical fiction? Also do you have any other reccomendations for me?

    Rodaba

  39. 339
    dorothy Says:

    Hi Rodaba,

Semiprecious takes place in the 1960’s….so not really historical, just a time a few decades before you were born. In 1960, I was about the same age as Garnet, my main character.

I’ll have to think about what books to recommend to you next. Now that I”m writing novels for adult readers, I’m not as familiar with what is begin published for girls your age. I do hope you enjoy SEMIPRECIOUS.

    D. Anne

  43. 343
    Rodaba Rahim Says:

Thanks!! I’ve also won the straight A award and the honor role award! The ceremony is also a talent show because they needed entertainment and so I auditioned! I’m going to be playing Dynamite on the flute!! I get to perform while recieving awards!! I can’t wait!!!!! SO many people auditioned but I was one of the few who made it!! My mom even bought a special dress just for the awards show!! Both talent shows are on the same day though! The other one is the school’s talent show!!! That’s an afterschool one but the judge was more picky in this audition but I made it!!!! I can’t wait for the talent show! I”M SO EXCITED THAT I CAN’T STOP JUMPING AND SKIPPING AROUND!! WHILE I’M TYPING THIS TO YOU I CAN’T SIT!! IT’S A MIRACLE I’M ACTUALLY ABLE TO TYPE THIS TO YOU!!!!

    ALWAYS EXCITED!!!!

    Rodaba Rahim Says:

I just finished Semiprecious!!! It took a little longer because I didn’t have much time to read as I did last time. However I didn’t expect an ending with a hook though!!!! I don’t know why most fans hate ending with hooks!!! Though I totally get what authors are trying to say!! They want you to think of your own ending! It’s like a test! If you have the answers right in front of you than whats the point of the test? There’s a million possible ways Semiprecious could have ended! Whatever someone wants to think happened is right. There’s no wrong answer!! I liked the ending and the book!!!

    Rodaba
