Your Comments and Questions

One of the things I love best about writing for teens and tweens is the chance to talk to my readers. If you have a question about my books, about writing and publishing in general, or if you just want to tell me what’s on your mind, this is the place. I’ll answer each message as soon as I can, but please remember that I travel quite a lot, and sometimes it may take a while for me to catch up. But I will write you back and you can read it here.

Or, click here if you’d rather send a private message that will not be posted.

    Hi Meliah,

Thanks for writing! I’m delighted that you enjoyed Bess’s story. I had a lot of fun writing it. Have a great day at school!

    Hi Ms. Love,
I read your book “The Puppeteer’s Apprentice” 3 years ago in 6th grade, but it really stuck with me because of how detailed and realistic it seemed. I also really really loved the bittersweet storyline (I remember crying buckets when the Puppeteer died). I checked that book out again a few weeks ago and read it again-it was every bit as good as I remembered. If that book was just a small glimpse at your creative genius, I’d love to read more books authored by you! However, I still wish you’d write a sequel to “The Puppeteer’s Apprentice” (even though my reading level is now a little more advanced than it was in 6th grade, but who’s to say what I can or can’t read, right? I mean, I find myself stealing into my little sister’s room sometimes and reading Junie B. Jones and those Magic Tree House books from when I was little :). I was looking at your books, and I didn’t know that you’ve written books for teenagers too-I’ll read those next! This summer I’ll just have to buy a batch of them and read them all. Anyways, thanks again for penning such a fantastic novel. Do you have any big writing plans going on next? This summer, I’m going to try to sit down and write a novel. I’ve tried before but I’ve never finished, the most pages I’ve gotten to is around 75. Any tips on dedication? Haha, I’ll need them. I’ve got a few interesting ideas that I want to follow up on, including one about an allegory that I got the idea for recently in class because we’re currently reading Lord of the Flies. Anyways, I’m sorry for making this letter so long, but I guess you got a glimpse at my chatterbox and slightly ditzy personality from this letter.
    Thanks again,
    Lisa 😀

    Hi Lisa,

I LOVED your letter and am delighted that you enjoyed The Puppeteer’s Apprentice a second time. I had such a great time writing that book and would love to write a sequel someday. In the meantime I hope you enjoy my other books. PICTURE PERFECT and DEFYING THE DIVA both have a high school freshman as a main character, going through all the boredom, excitement and fear of high school.
SEMIPRECIOUS is about two sisters ages 13 and 15, and is set in Oklahoma in 1960. Sort of historical though of course not nearly so far back in time as our Puppeteer.

Seventy five pages is a very good start on a story. MY best advice on how to finish is to write out a couple of sentences describing the events of each scene. I still do that when I write and it keeps me on track and from running out of ideas right in the big middle of everything. Some other authors I know write the ENDING first and then work backwards. there are many ways to work, and each author eventually settles on a method that works best. I hope you will keep experimenting and keep writing!

The last few years Ive been writing some books for adults under the name Dorothy Love. Historical novels, which I love writing. You are old enough to read them if you like that sort of story. Each of the books has some romance, some history and a mystery….I have a separate website for those books. You can find it at http://www.DorothyLoveBooks.com

Thanks for taking time to write. Hearing from readers who enjoy my books is the best thing about being a writer.

I love your books so much, where do you get the inspiration?

    Hi D Anne,
I couldn’t seem to find your e-mail address (mine has changed so many times over the years). I’ve been browsing books to buy for my new 5th grade class, and of course, I thought of you! You have always been such an inspiration, and are a big reason why I love to teach literacy. I’d love to catch up, either here or through e-mail. I can see from your website that you’ve been busy. Congratulations! I can’t wait to check out your newest books!
    Love,
    Lauren

  6. Ms. Hantman's Class

    Dear D. Anne Love,

We are students from Ms. Hantman’s class. We are reading Dakota Spring, and we have some questions for you. How did you get the idea for the grandmother? (Was your grandma like that?) Was one of your siblings like Jess? What was your inspiration for the book? Did you travel anywhere to write Dakota Spring?

We heard that you visited many different schools, which is how you met Ms. Hantman. How many schools have you visited? If you ever have free time, can you visit us?

We checked out your site and what you wrote. (We liked your two dogs!) Where is your favorite place to write? How many books have you written? How old were you when you wrote your first book? What kinds of challenges do you face when you write books? Do you have any other favorite writers or books? What was your childhood like? How many books do you hope to write throughout your career? (We were also wondering how you skinned your knee when you were 11 years old.)

We have lots of questions! We can’t wait for your response! 🙂
    Love,
    Ms. Hantman’s class (The Gators)

    HI there Gators!

What a great letter. So many questions that the answers were too long to post here on the website. Ms Hantmann, please check your email! I just sent you all a long letter to your school email address.

Thanks for writing. It’s such fun hearing from readers.

    Dear Ms.Love,
I’ve read Picture Perfect and Defying the Diva. I LOVED, LOVED them so much! They are both my favorite, but if I had to choose, i’d choose Defying the Diva. I haven’t read semiprecious yet, but I will soon! You are such an amazing author and hope you keep writing more books. 😀 . But I have a single question. Will you be writing more books after you have already written and published Defying the Diva? Hope to hear from you!

Hi AnaLucy! Thanks so much for writing. I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the books. I had a great time writing those stories. Right now I’m working on some books for older readers but I’d love to write more teen books some day. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy Semiprecious. Have a great summer, D. Anne
