Your Comments and Questions

One of the things I love best about writing for teens and tweens is the chance to talk to my readers. If you have a question about my books, about writing and publishing in general, or if you just want to tell me what’s on your mind, this is the place. I’ll answer each message as soon as I can, but please remember that I travel quite a lot, and sometimes it may take a while for me to catch up. But I will write you back and you can read it here.

Or, click here if you’d rather send a private message that will not be posted.

Once again me Sorry about this,
Blogging to an author is really cool ESPICALLY IF THEY WITE BACK!! I told my friends about you they say its auto typed some of them but most of them say When do you get time to write back. So, When DO YOU get time to write back and have fun? I mean i know authors sit for a while thinking, What story should i write about…… then if they come up with it they wont stop till they finish. Do you do that? When you were a kid did you join any activities? How do you come up with rwally great stories? Hope i can be an amazing author like you one day. Maybe ill come up with a story and tell you. But do you have an ideas what i shoukld write about?
    An inspired girl,
    Anisha (mz.Hantman EX student :DD)

Im trying out for cheerleading on monday…. After school and you have to do the cheer they taught you and a toe touch and for extra credit only if you can and want you cand do a cart wheel or back flip. BUT Want to know something, I cant EVEN DO A CARTWHEEL!! I really hope i get in. Because if I do they will teach me how to do back flips and cheers and stuff. Ive always wanted to be a cheerleader but it was tooooo expensive! Wish me luck on that day!!

Oh no, my dear, NOTHING is autotyped. It’s little old me, sitting here every night answering my mail. 🙂 I take time to write to my readers late at night after all my other work is done. It takes me several months to write the first draft of a story, and then I have to go back and write parts of it over again….so no, I don’t ork straight through. I usually work from 9 to 5 every day and try to take time for fun on the weekends. I like to go to musicals and concerts. And I like to take my two dogs on hikes in the parks. When I was a kid, I played basketball and later I worked on the school newspaper. I was in a couple of after school clubs. But mostly I read books!! You should write the kinds of books you most like to read. Do you like adventure stories, or science fiction, or stories about girls like you? Write what you love to read.

    Oh man, am I tired!

    Good night,
    D Anne

    Love Anish

  10. dorothy

Hi Sweetie! I’m sorry I didn’t get to all your posts. I’ve been busy writing, and also getting ready for Christmas. I’m sorry that you didn’t get into cheerleading, but I know you are sweet and smart and you will find something else to do that you will like just as much. And you can always practice your cheers and try out again next year. Don’t give up! You should write about the things that you like to read about. For instance I love reading about how people lived way back in the 1800’s so I write stories that take place then. I like to read about strong women who reach their goals no matter what, so that’s the kind of woman who becomes the main character in my story. Remember how Garnet in SEMIPRECIOUS went after her mom, no matter how hard it was?

I’m glad you like history books, and animals and adventures. I love those too! I don’t read comics now but I did when I was your age.

For the next few weeks I will be finishing up some projects and doing my Christmas shopping. So I may not get to answer letters here on my website. Too much to do before Christmas!!

    Cheers,
    D Anne

    Hey 🙂
How was your Christmas and New year? Mine was great!! I recently started reading your book Semiprecious. I love it!
    Love,
    Anisha

  15. dorothy

Hi Anisha, I’m glad you had a wonderful Christmas. Mine was great, too. My husband gave me a new camera and a very pretty bracelet, and I contributed to several charities to help others. That was the best feeling of all! We decorated the house, our front door and fireplace mantel with garlands, ornaments, a wreath, and thousands of tiny white lights. Major, my older golden retriever, ate three of my ornaments!! Luckily they were made of paper so he didn’t get sick, but I was sad to lose those ornaments because I had had them for many many years.

I’m glad you are enjoying SEMIPRECIOUS. I just found out that one of my older books, THE SECRET PRINCE is going to be published in paperback at the end of this month. If you missed that one, you can find it at Amazon. The main character is a boy, but his twin sister, who is a princess in hiding, has a big part in the story, too.

Have a great new year! D. Anne

  16. Anisha

    Hey 🙂
That sucks your dog ate your ordements. One of our ordements broke in the box and we had an snowman ordement made from the pieces, it was all together and POOF the bottom half disappered! Im most defintiley checkout Secret Prince! All your books are SUPER good, so i know Ill like this one! I want to be a Lawyer when I grow up! 🙂
    Love,
    Anisha 🙂

Do you know any other really good books, I should read? Guess what?! I wrote a poem and story, but do you have an email i could send a copy of it too? That way you could edit it or read it?
    Love, Anisha
    p.s. I got a hair cut!

  19. dorothy

    Hey Anisha,

Instead of giving you a list of books, here are a few of my favorite authors I think you will enjoy. Your librarian at school can help you find their books: Books by: Kimberly Willis Holt, Karen Cushman, Kate Di Camillo. I think you would LOVE Kate’s book called Because of Winn Dixie. It came out many years ago so maybe you have already read it. I’m delighted you are writing poems and stories and I wish I had time to read them, but I am swamped with work! One of my books for grownups is coming out March 1st, and I have a new one to write and turn in a few months. I’ll bet your teacher would LOVE to read you work and give you some ideas for editing.

Have a great day!! D Anne

  20. Anisha

    Dear D. Anne Love,
I will search thoose authors you recommended right now! I’ve read Because of Winn Dixie before in 4th grade as class read when we read together. It was such a SUPER book! Right now im reading along with Semiprecious, Holes. Its a good book. Im comparing to the movie! Im doijng my next book report on your book Semiprecious. You know your book a year without rain? Its also a song by Selena Gomez. My bithday is March 2nd! Im almost 12! Im having a sleepover birthday party! Maybe you could write a book called Overly protective!
    Love,
    Anisha

  21. Dionna

Hi, I just recently started readind your books and finishes Semiprecious,Picture Perfect, and Defying Diva. I really enjoyed all of them but when I finshed Semiprecious i was thinking to myself that if there was a second book to Semiprecious that would be GREAT! I really love you and I tell all my friends and family to read your books. I connect alot on your books and im even doing a school project on one of them. I HOPE YOU WRITE BACK TO LET ME KNOW IF YOUR GOING TO WRITE A SECOND BOOK TO SEMIPRECIOUS because i really want to know what happenes with the mom and if their lives are somewhat the same in maribeau or if they decide to get a house in Oklahoma.

    Yours Truly,
    Dionna D.

  22. dorothy

Hey there Dionna, I’m so glad you enjoyed the books. I had a blast writing them. And thank yo so much for recommending my books to your friends. Right now, there are no plans for a sequel to SEMIPRECIOUS but if it ever happens I’ll post the news right here on the website. Did you notice that Opal was mentioned in DIVA?? That gives you a clue about what happened to her when she grew up.

I have always imagined that Opal and Garnet went home to Mirabeau with their dad. Maybe someday I will have the chance to tell the rest of their story.

    All my best,
    D Anne

  23. Dionna

    Hi again
Im doing a scrapbook on Picture Perfect for a english project any tips that i can maybe use.

    Yous truly,
    Dionna

  24. dorothy

    hi Dionna,

I’m sorry to be so long in answering your question. My brother is very sick and I have been out of town. If you are still working on your project, maybe you could put some photos of you and your friends in it, and write about how they reminded you of characters in the book. Or write about what a perfect family means to you.

    Sincerely,
    DAnne

  25. Dionna

Hi Miss.Love i took some of your advice and got a 100 now my whole english class is reading Picture Perfect and we all enjoy and love it very much and the whole class is a fan of you and will read every book you write. We hope to see more preteen books by you so we can read them.

  26. dorothy

Wow, Dionna, you got a 100 on your paper? Fantastic!! Congratulations. 🙂 I’m thrilled to know that your class is enjoying Phoebe’s story. I had a great time writing it. Say hi to your classmates and your teacher for me. And keep on reading!

    Sincerely,
    D Anne

  27. Grace

    Dear Miss Love,
I have just now finished reading your book ‘Semiprecious’ that I checked out of my school library. I’m not quite sure what all to say, in fear of not saying enough or not saying the right things. But I will tell you I enjoyed the story of Garnet and her sister, Opal, and the book was very interesting and kept me reading.
I plan on reading more of your books soon, and am very excited. I have many favorite authors, consisting of J.K. Rowling and Meg Cabot, and I have to say, you’re one of my favorites. I love the way you tell the story and the way you write.
I’m not sure of what else to say, I’m not very good at this kind of thing. But I guess I’d just like to say thank you for writing books for preteens and teens.
Oh, and one more thing… Do you have any tips on writing? I dream of becoming an author, too, and I’m not sure where to start. I can’t finish any of my stories, but my poetry is okay. I kind of want to go to Sarah Lawrence for college in New York state, but I’m not sure. What do you recommend?
I’m sorry for the length of this letter, but I have so much to say and I really hope I worded and said everything right.
    Sincerely Yours,
    Grace

  28. dorothy

    Hi grace,

Your letter was just perfect. Thanks so much for writing to me. As far as advice on writing, if you look here on the website, you will find a page of tips for writers. Click there for some ideas on how to get ideas for stories, etc. You can also check out m y blog called Writers Caffeine, whichh as all sorts of tips for writing. Go to my other website, http://www.DorothyLoveBooks.com click on Writers Caffeine. On the right hand side, you will find a way to access the archives for different posts. My brother is very sick and so I am not posting there this week, but there are tons of posts to choose from. I hope you will find it helpful.

Sometimes it takes years to finish a novel, so don’t get discouraged! Just keep writing.

As far as colleges go, Sarah Lawrence is an excellent choice. The University of Iowa in Iowa City has a nationally recognized program in writing. A number of famous authors including Pulitzer Prize winners, studied creative writing there. Getting in is very competitive, but worth the effort. Regardless of where you go to school, the most important thing is to study widely, travel broadly, read voraciously, and practice your craft every day by writing poetry, a novel, a short story, a play, a movie script. All of it is important to the mastery of storytelling.

    All my best,
    D Anne

  29. Grace

Thank you very much for the advice. I really appreciate it, and the fact that you take time out of your day to talk to us (your fans).
Also, my best wishes to your brother. I sincerely hope he gets better. My great-grandmother over came cancer a couple of years ago. What ever your brother has, I hope he’ll recover fast and healthy like her.

    Best Wishes,
    Grace

  30. dorothy

Dear Grace, what a sweet and thoughtful note. Thank you. I am so glad your great grandmother got better. Unfortunately, my brother died yesterday morning. I really hope someday scientists can develop a vaccine that everyone can take, just like a flu shot, and no one will ever have to suffer from it again.

    warmest wishes to you,
    D Anne

  31. Dionna

    Dear Ms.love

My english class finished the book and we all loved it and we all wanna know if theres going to be other books by you but similar the the ” Teenage life” like all the other kids/teen books you write? Also some of my classmates have been hearing your starting a sequal. Is it true?

    Love forever,
    Dionna D

  32. dorothy

    Hi Dionna,

So happy to hear from you and to know your class enjoyed my book. I am sad to tell you that as of right now, I don’t have a publishing contract to write more of my teen life books. But I hope that will change someday. I loved writing about Phoebe and Zane, about Garnet and Opal, about Haley and Harrison….and I would love to write more stories about them. Now, I have a question for you: How many of your classmates have a Kindle reader, or a Nook, or some other kind of e-book reader? I do have a new book written that’s called WILD ANGELS…..and I am thinking about publishing it as an electronic book. But only if my fans have a way to download it to a Kindle or some such….

    Love you guys back!
    D Anne

  33. Anisha

    Hey Long time no talk!
Cant believe 6th grade is almost over! next is 7th grade! So any 7th grade book recommendations?

  34. dorothy

Hi Anisha, Wow, you are headed to 7th grade. Fantastic. As far as books to recommend, anything by Frances ORoark Dowell will be great. Start with her book called Dovey Coe. Dovey is a lot like Garnet in Semiprecious. I think you will like her, and her story. In the meantime, have a wonderful summer!

    D Anne

  35. Nisha

    Hey,
I loved Garnet so im sure I will Love Dovey! I did my book report on Semiprecious back In January and got a 94% i guess I would have got a 100% but my handwriting I guess. Our End of the year field trip is to Disney World but its $105! So my dad made me choose between The field trip or a 3week vaction over the summer so I chose the sumer. Plus, I normally get books from the book store so I could get some of your books!

  36. dorothy

Hi! Well, a 94 is very very good. You should be proud of yourself! I hope you have a fabulous summer filled with sun and fun and lots of wonderful books!

    Dear D. Anne,

Please help! We want to help prove that teens are ready for gay main characters in YA fiction. As Co-Authors of a newly published Young Adult e-book, Second Sight, we are hoping you will be willing to review our book. We are surprised at how many people think gay characters are not appropriate for YA books.
Your talent as a writer and obvious sense of humanity would be a blessing to us! We also want to create positive change through literature.
You can get free copy of the book at Smashwords.com. At the checkout enter the coupon code NT88H. It is good until Nov. 18.
    TC Hart

Below is the blurb from Second Sight:

Being gay in high school is not always easy, and now Kyle is having unexplained visions. His friend, Jenny, is convinced that he is psychic. When thefts occur at school, Kyle realizes that his visions may be trying to tell him something, if only he could figure them out!

“So I’m both gay and psychic? Wow, that’s a lot for one high school guy to handle.”

We have had several positive reviews. The links are listed below. However we are hoping to get support from you. As authors we strongly believe in the power of literature to improve young lives and ultimately change our world. If you would be willing to either review or give advice for our book please feel to contact us. We hope to hear back from you.
